Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare an 8×8-inch baking dish by greasing it or lining it with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the unsulphured molasses and water until fully combined.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ground ginger, ground cloves, and salt.
  4. Create three wells in your dry mixture; add the vanilla extract in one, apple cider vinegar in another, and canola oil in the larger well.
  5. Pour the molasses-water mixture over the dry ingredients and gently stir until just combined.
  6. Transfer the batter to your prepared baking dish and spread it evenly across the surface.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 35 minutes. Check for doneness with a toothpick.
  8. Let the cake cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes before serving.
