Step-by-Step Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare an 8x8-inch baking pan by lining it with parchment paper or greasing it.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 ½ cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, ½ teaspoon of baking soda, along with ½ teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon of ground nutmeg.
- Cream together ½ cup of softened unsalted butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
- Add one large egg, ½ cup of buttermilk, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix on low speed until well blended.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Once baked, remove from the oven and let the bars cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup of powdered sugar, ¼ cup of maple syrup, ½ teaspoon of maple extract, and 1 tablespoon of milk until smooth.
- Drizzle or spread the glaze over the cooled bars and allow to set for a few minutes before cutting into squares.
