Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface to smooth out any creases.
  3. Cut each puff pastry sheet into four equal squares.
  4. Whisk together the beaten egg and milk until smooth for the egg wash.
  5. On each square, layer a slice of ham followed by a slice of cheese.
  6. Sprinkle salt and pepper over the layers, and add fresh herbs if desired.
  7. Seal with another pastry square, crimping the edges with a fork.
  8. Brush the tops with the egg wash for a golden finish.
  9. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden and flaky.
  10. Let cool for a few minutes before serving warm.
