  2. Combine packed brown sugar, water (or apple juice), cornstarch, lemon juice, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add sliced apples and cook for 3-5 minutes until slightly softened.
  3. Spread the apple mixture evenly into the prepared baking pan.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, white sugar, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Gradually mix in milk and melted butter, stirring gently to remain a bit lumpy.
  5. Pour the biscuit batter over the cooked apples, smoothing the top. Sprinkle ground cinnamon over the biscuit layer.
  6. Bake for 38-40 minutes until the topping is golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
